James Nottingham is the creator of The Learning Pit; author of 9 books; founder of Challenging Learning; and employer of 30 staff in 6 countries, including Australia. He has been a teacher’s aide, teacher and leader across the 3-19 age range, as well as director of an award-winning social regeneration project in north east England. He is a sought-after keynote speaker, regularly headlining national and international conferences. He has been on many speaking tours with John Hattie, Carol Dweck and others, and is described by Skolvärlden (Swedish Teaching Union) as “one of the most talked about names in the world of school development”. Recently, he was listed among the Future 500 – “a definitive list of the UK’s most forward thinking and creative innovators.”
Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford University. Her research has focused on why people succeed and how to foster success. She has held professorships at Columbia and Harvard Universities, has lectured all over the world, and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her scholarly book Self-Theories: Their Role in Motivation, Personality, and Development was named Book of the Year by the World Education Federation. Her work has been featured in such publications as The New Yorker, Time, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe, and she has appeared on Today and 20/20.
Professor John Hattie is an award-winning education researcher and best-selling author with over 25 years of experience examining what works best in student learning and achievement. His research, better known as Visible Learning, is a culmination of over 25 years synthesizing more than 1,500 meta-analyses comprising more than 90,000 studies involving over 300 million students around the world. He has presented and keynoted in over 350 international conferences and has received numerous recognitions for his contributions to education. His notable publications include Visible Learning, Visible Learning for Teachers, Visible Learning and the Science of How We Learn, Visible Learning for Mathematics, Grades K-12, and, most recently, 10 Mindframes for Visible Learning.
Viviane is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at The University of Auckland and Academic Director of its Centre for Educational Leadership. The Centre delivers the national induction programme for new school principals, a regional programme for experienced principals, and a comprehensive suite of research-based professional learning opportunities for all types of school leaders. Viviane specialises in research on school improvement, leadership and the relationship between research and the improvement of practice. She is the author of five books and numerous chapters and journal articles. Her work has been published in such leading international journals as Educational Researcher, Educational Administration Quarterly and Review of Educational Research. Viviane has received several national and international awards for her contribution to educational research, policy and practice. She was honoured by the Australian Council of Educational Leaders by being invited to deliver the William Walker Oration and being given the 2007 Headley Beare award for educational writing. In January 2008 she was also honoured by the New Zealand Secondary Principals Association for her outstanding contribution to educational leadership. In 2009 she received the prestigious William Davis award at the American Educational Research Association for her scholarship on educational leadership.
Douglas Fisher, Ph.D., is Professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State Universityand a teacher leader at Health Sciences High & Middle College. He is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame and is the recipient of an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award, the Farmer award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, as well as a Christa McAuliffe award for excellence in teacher education. He has published numerous articles on improving student achievement as well as books, such as Text-Complexity: Raising Rigor in Reading (with Nancy Frey and Diane Lapp), Checking for Understanding (with Nancy Frey) and Common Core English Language Arts in a PLC at Work (with Nancy Frey). He is a board member of the International Reading Association and a past board member of the Literacy Research Association.
Pasi Sahlberg is a professor of education policy and research director at the Gonski Institute for Education, University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He is a Finnish educator who has worked as schoolteacher, teacher-educator, researcher, and policy-maker in Finland and has examined and advised education reforms around the world. His recent books include Finnish Lessons 2.0: What can the world learn from educational change in Finland (2015), FinnishED Leadership: Four big, inexpensive ideas to transform education (2018), and Let the Children Play! Why more play will save our schools and help children thrive (with William Doyle, 2019).
