Read Bio in Swedish

Dr. Carmen Bergmann is Senior Consultant and Regional Manager for Challenging Learning’s work in North and South America. She is also co-creator for key aspects of our online services, including book studies, conferences and lesson plan downloads; host of our introductory and in-depth webinar series; and principal author of the Challenging Learning blog. Her excellent reputation for guiding and encouraging staff online and in-person has led to powerful cultural change in pedagogy and leadership around the world.

Before joining Challenging Learning, Carmen was the assistant superintendent for a Regional Office of Education, advising and supporting schools in 30 school districts in central Illinois. This followed 11 years as a teacher; nine years as a principal; and three as Director of Elementary Education. She has a master’s degree in administration; a superintendent’s certificate; and an EdD in Education Administration Foundations.

Carmen witnessed first-hand the impact of Challenging Learning in her native USA and then on study tours in Europe, including a conference tour with Carol Dweck and James Nottingham in Europe in 2019. From her 25+ years’ experience in education, she had never witnessed such sustainable and context-driven improvements. The company’s approach is so finely tuned to the needs and goals of the organisation, includes all stakeholders, and effectively addresses learning in all content areas that the outcomes far surpass anything she’d seen before. So, as the saying goes, she loved the mission so much, she joined the company!

When working with educators, Carmen likes to blend the sharing of high impact, research-based practices with rich dialogue and engagement to embed improvement and progress. Staff at all levels have noted the value and increased impact on school culture and student learning that comes from these continuous action learning cycles.

Carmen has a strong sporting background, winning a university scholarship for softball and playing competitively until recently. She has since encouraged her children in their sporting endeavours, with all three of them engaging in competitive swimming. Her husband is a high school physics teacher and her son a math teacher, so as a family of five (plus two dogs), they form a pretty high-functioning quiz team!
